There is an event or series of them that causes a reaction in your nervous system every time you are reminded of it.
For example, some individuals feel out of control of their emotions and don't know why, others lash out at others and don't know how to stop it, while others avoid things and people that remind them of the traumatic event.
The types of trauma I can help with include, but are not limited to the following:
When someone who works with or takes care of a traumatized person experiences the following: thinks a lot about the traumatized person; is overly emotionally involved with the traumatized person, and has lingering feelings of anger, rage and sadness about the traumatized person. Some professions that work with many traumatized people include: therapists/social workers/counselors, police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, firefighters, paramedics.
Each session will typically take around 50 minutes and we typically start to meet weekly or every other week.
It depends, each individual and journey is unique. I'm here to work alongside you and we will collaborate together to figure out when you are well enough to "graduate" from therapy.
During the first month of therapy, we will discuss how therapy will look like and I can provide an approximate time frame of how long it can take based on your needs and goals.
My approach includes empathy, compassion, some interventions from Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and will encourage you to practice self-compassion.
Additionally, I'm trained in providing a modality called Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).
ART is a technique that uses both the right (emotions) and left (intellect) side of the brain that help people feel better after as little as one ART session. The reported benefits of this technique include finding relief from trauma symptoms such as no longer having the emotional reaction from the trauma.
